I followed the first people my favorite people follow (you have to calculate the /friends?page=##) and made great contacts that way right from the get-go. (But now I'm scaling back from being over-twerped).
I also don't see how people don't engage with @'s. How can you not, with all the interesting things people are doing and sharing?
